Tony Mazzo is a senior Principal and CEO of Urban Foundation/Engineering, LLC. Tony earned both his bachelor’s degree and his master’s degree in civil engineering from The City College of New York (CCNY) and is also a NYS licensed Professional Engineer.
In 1978, Tony began his professional career working for Slattery Associates. In 1981 Tony joined the Urban team, where he developed his professional expertise in both new foundation construction and structural alterations for existing buildings, which include apartment buildings, office towers, hospitals, museums, churches, schools, universities and landmark structures.
Tony is the inventor and owns the U.S. Patent for his “cylindrical core beam for high-capacity drilled-in-caissons”, first introduced in 2001 to support the super columns for the new Times Square Tower in New York City. He is a member of numerous professional organizations including The Moles, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Deep Foundations Institute. Tony is the Chairman of The Board of Trustees for the Medisys Health Network and is a former instructor for the NYU School for Continuing Education. He has authored a section in The McGraw Hill Construction Encyclopedia on the topic of “piling” and he has conducted many lectures at universities and professional societies on the technical aspects of foundation construction.
In 1998, Tony managed the design and historic relocation of the landmark Empire Theater. The 100 years old theater was moved 170 feet along West 42nd Street, in the heart of Times Square, using a pile supported steel rail system and a series of long stroke hydraulic jacks.
In 2009, Tony received the “Leader of Industry” award from the Concrete Industry Board.
In 2022, Tony designed and managed the historic raising of the landmark Palace Theater, weighing 7000 tons, to a height of 30 feet above sidewalk level in the middle of Times Square. Tony holds a U.S. Patent for inventing his proprietary “hydraulic lifting caisson”, which served as the lifting mechanism to successfully lift the Palace Theater to its new height. Later that year, Tony received the Engineering News Record “Award of Excellence” and was honored as one of ENR’s Top Newsmakers of 2022.
